Some "Rare" Photos!
When Rare Studios first started off in 1985, they were developing small games for Nintendo. They weren't very popular and developed a few games for other companies as well.
Slalom was the very first game Rare created. It was based on the actual sport of Slalom, which is the sport of either skiing or snowboarding through gates.
They then went on to create many other games, but their first hit was "Battletoads", in 1991. This game was known of by some people, but Rare was still not very popular.
Flash forward 3 years and Rare had created their first huge success. Nintendo had given them rights to use Donkey Kong in one of their games. They then created the first Donkey Kong Country game. This game was what transformed Donkey Kong into the tie-wearing gorilla we all know and love.
Their next big hit was Banjo-Kazooie. This game was a 3D platformer meant to challenge Super Mario 64. Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country are probably the two most famous games Rare has made. Both games are highly praisedby fans.
Now you may be thinking that every game that Rare makes is kid-friendly. If it weren't for Conker's Bad Fur Day, this may be the case. This game is another 3D platformer, but your main objective is to get home after a hangover. There is a lot of inappropiate things in this game and that is why only people over the age of 17 are allowed to play it.
In 2002, Rare was bought by Microsoft. Nobody knows why Nintendo didn't buy them, but now Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, and Battletoads all belong to Xbox.
You may be wondering why I didn't mention the Donkey Kong Country series. Since Nintendo still owns the rights to Donkey Kong, they are still making games for this series. At least one series is still free!
Now, the three games that I mentioned have had some activity with Microsoft. Battletoads is possibly getting a sequel, Conker got a remaster of his game, and Banjo-Kazooie got remasters of their games with a third installment in the series released in 2008. This game is called Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. It was criticized for not being a good Banjo game and focusing more on gimmicks. Many fans then lost hope with the series then.
However, there is a light at the end of this tunnel. On June 11, 2019, Banjo and Kazooie were announced as the 3rd fighter in the Smash Bros Ultimate Fighters Pass! With their inclusion is Smash, fans are hoping that this means a Banjo-Threeie is in the works. Who knows what could happen to this duo, and Rare as a whole?! We can only wait and see.
